How to read your processing statement

Where the real fees hide, and the three numbers worth circling before you call anyone.

Processing statements are long on purpose. The good news is that you only need a few numbers to know whether you’re paying a fair price.

The three numbers to circle

  • Total sales processed: every card dollar that went through the account that month.
  • Total fees: everything you were charged, including monthly and per-item fees.
  • Your effective rate: total fees divided by total sales.

The effective rate is the one that matters most. It turns pages of line items into a single percentage you can compare against any quote.

Fees worth questioning

  • Statement or paper fees on an account you only view online.
  • PCI non-compliance fees you could avoid by finishing the yearly questionnaire.
  • Rate increases that showed up without a clear notice.
